American Social Media Personality Fined Following Large-Scale Electric Bike Gathering on Iconic Australian Bridge
New South Wales police have levied a penalty against an American social media personality and handed out two traffic infringement notices for alleged reckless operation after a swarm of electric bicycle users converged on the famous Sydney landmark during peak-hour traffic on Tuesday.
The Event: An Illegal Gathering
A group of approximately 40 individuals riding e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The assembly then turned around and traveled through the downtown area and Haymarket.
"This had a risk of serious injury or fatalities," remarked a senior police official David Driver on the following day.
Law enforcement said they did not chase right away the group due to safety concerns but instead located the assembly at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.
Penalties Issued for Influencer
On Saturday, police stated they had issued the American online personality who goes by the influencer, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a fine of over five hundred dollars and three demerit points per notice, in relation to the bridge ride-out. They added that the investigation is ongoing.
The influencer reportedly has over 3.4m followers on one platform and over 1.2m on the social media app.
Influencer's Comments
The content creator gave comments to a local publication recently after the incident gained traction on digital platforms, stating he regretted giving "the biking community" a negative image.
"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was among the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, so I’m going to come here respecting the laws and norms of the city. So when I decided to do a public meeting it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to say hi near the bridge."
"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, an illegal act. Or we turn around, basically, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."
National Debate on E-Bike Regulation
The spate of electric bicycles on roads nationwide has sparked growing calls for stricter rules. A senior government official, Mark Butler, recently said that illegal ebikes were a "total menace on the road."
"Young people have engaged in stupid things on bikes since the invention of the penny-farthing [but] the harm that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," the minister said. "We must make sure we stop these things coming into the country [and] police are granted the authority to take strong action, to take them away, to destroy them, to dispose of them."
The state reported over two hundred injuries associated with ebikes in the previous year. However, in the initial half of the following year, that number jumped to 233 injuries plus four fatalities.
