A minimum of 64 Killed in Rio's Biggest Police Raid on Organized Crime
No less than 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. More than 80 people were taken into custody.
Violent conflicts commenced when about 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Raid Aftermath
The area of favelas near Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Local authorities stated at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Resident Accounts
Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed across the area.

The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces stated more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, in addition to multiple guns.
